Todd and I were getting ready for bed last night when all the smoke alarms went off. We both sort of jumped and just when we got to the hall, they all turned off. Todd looked around and everything seemed to be fine, so we continued getting ready for bed. A few minutes later, they came on again. I'm still not sure how the kids didn't wake up, the alarms were shrieking so loudly and since they are all connected to each other, both kids had one in their rooms blaring too. But again, after five seconds or so, they all turned off again. I can't remember if it was the second or third time, but finally Todd disconnected the oldest alarm in the hall. We figured the old one was to blame. My heart was racing, but we climbed into bed.
You can guess what happened then. A half hour into sleep and they all came on again!!! We both shot out of bed. This time Todd went directly into the garage and got the ladder. Why? Because if the one in the hall hadn't been the one malfunctioning, clearly it would be the only one that you can't reach unless you precariously balance a ladder on the stairs!
Todd climbed up while I held the ladder. I was shaking more than he was. It went off again while he was up there. I imagined the ladder slipping, him falling down the stairs, the kids waking up and crying, but none of that happened. Todd made it safely down, put the ladder back in the garage and we went to bed.

We've had that exact thing happen a couple times at our house. It totally freaks you out! And of course it only happens at night. We called the fire department the first time it happened and they said that sometimes a bug will crawl into the detector and that'll cause it to go off. Oh, and sometimes the one that has the problem will blink red, for future reference.
Are yours connected to the house, like wired? Or do they simply need new batteries? Either way, that would have totally freaked me out too. Glad Todd was home when it happened to calm your frayed nerves.
We had the same thing happen in our Lehi house. Glad everything was okay and glad the kids didn't wake up-though it is kind of scary that they didn't. There have been studies about this.
Wow..that was an adventure you could have lived without.
Ditto to all said.
Sometimes the alarms can get bunged up with dust and such. You might try vacuuming then out too.
